ME & YOU’S WINTER 2020 FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

Who would’ve thought that 2020 would turn out this way? We were making all of these temporary changes to our life, and now they’re all starting to feel closer to permanent. Eight months later, and we've now realized that this is a new normal, and with that we're forced to change and address these challenging times head on.

Thank you for being a part of our Me & You family. Our families need our support more than ever this year as they navigate the changing landscape, remote learning for their kids, and the health and financial impacts of this ongoing pandemic. Many of our families do not have the privilege of working remotely, many of them have lost their jobs, or are unable to work, or as they have to stay home because someone has to be there for their kids.

This year we’re partnering with 5 schools in the D.C. metro region - Braddock Elementary, Summit Hall Elementary, Forest Oak Middle School, Jefferson Academy and LAYCCA. We’ve spent the past few months working with the teachers and the administrations at these schools to figure out the highest needs and how we can best support as they transition between virtual and hybrid learning programs. Our schools face a myriad of challenges, as most are Title I schools, with families falling in the low-income bracket. Challenges include access to internet, a shortage of computers and supplies, and access to meals. For many of our students, going to school means they’ll have a meal that day.

Me & You will be Supporting

  • 70 Toiletry Packages - Full-sized toiletry items will include shampoo & conditioner, soap, detergent, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, floss, and lotion.

  • 60 Holiday Adoptions - We’ll be providing gift cards and gifts to our families for the holidays. If you’d like to adopt a family, please reach out to info@meandyou.city before Friday, Dec. 4th. Donations must be received by Thursday, Dec. 10th.

  • 210 Grocery Store Gift Cards - We’ll be providing various grocery store gift cards for our families. If you’d like to provide a grocery gift card, please reach out to info@meandyou.city for specific list of grocery stores and value requested by the school.

  • 40 Winter Coats - We’ll be providing new winter coats for elementary school students. We’ll also be collecting gently used coats in children and/or adult sizes. Please reach out to info@meandyou.city if you’d like to schedule a drop-off.

  • Chromebooks, Software, and School Supplies - We’re providing Chromebooks, wired earbuds, white boards, and Software Licensing for virtual learning.

  • Healthcare Needs - We’re providing baby wipes, cough drops, tea, coup and ramen for our families.

  • Class T-Shirt - We’re providing an 8th grade class with their Class Tees this year!

  • Donations Needed - We’re accepting donations of gently used work/interview attire, winter hats, gloves, scarves, coats, blankets! Please reach out to info@meandyou.city if you’d like to schedule a drop-off.

  • We’re also supporting Student Led Conferences, which promotes engagement and community at our schools, along with navigating our Homeless and Experiences program this year!

WHO WE ARE

As a start-up 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we work to advocate for students and those without a home in the D.C. metro region. We partner with schools in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia to provide students with the necessary items and services for a well-rounded life. We currently partner with 5 schools, and are in the process of expanding. Most of our students come from low-income families, some are homeless and live in temporary housing. We work with teachers and administrative staff at the schools to determine need, and from there we provide support. We’ve provided school supplies, backpacks, clothes, school uniforms, as well as toiletries for their families to take home.

In 2018, we launched our experiences program, which focuses on giving experiences, rather than things, to kids. For many of the families we support, taking their kids to a sporting

event, an art gallery or a concert are beyond their financial means. We hope that by providing them these opportunities, it gives them a richer experience growing up, and as a result, opens their eyes to the possibilities that could be. Our past programs have included professional basketball games where students are able to watch the players’ warm-up on the court, in-door rock climbing and trauma informed yoga.

For our city’s homeless, we distribute care packages, clothes, food and other necessities. We reach out to people on our streets, and help them with their everyday life as best we can. We seek to make a difference in someone else’s life, even if it’s only for a day.

OUR STORY

We were single on Valentine's Day. That's pretty much the story. We didn't have any plans, and instead of partaking in a "girls night out" or sitting on the couch in our PJ's, we decided to go out and give some love to people who really needed it.

At first, we were just going to put everything together ourselves. A meal, a care package, however much we could afford. But then we decided, why not throw it out there and see who was interested in helping us? No fundraisers, just a Facebook post. We were overwhelmed with the support that people we knew showed. That first drive we made two hundred sandwiches and one hundred care packages. We collected just short of $1,000 for the endeavor.

We researched where homeless people in D.C. reside. And we went out onto the streets on that cold February day in 2015.

Our mission is to make a difference in the lives of kids and families in need and those without a home on our streets, in our communities and around our cities. We strive to make a direct impact on someone’s life, even if it’s only for a day. In the District, there were 11,128 literally homeless individuals in 2017, according to a report by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ Homeless Services Planning and Coordinating Committee.

“We don’t all got it the same,” a former inmate once said to me. We may have grown up in the same city, but our circumstances may not necessarily have been the same, so we strive to look out for one another.

COVID-19 UPDATE

We hope you and your families are staying safe during this pandemic. We've reached out to the schools that we support in DC, MD and VA to see how we can help during this time. We've donated diapers and wipes, and we'll also be donating grocery store gift cards and funds to the schools to distribute to their students and families.

We thank everyone for reaching out to us to see how they can support others during this time. We appreciate the kindness tenfold.

Thank you,

Me & You

THOSE WITHOUT A HOME

We work to advocate for students in the D.C. metro region. We’ve provided school supplies, backpacks, clothes, school uniforms, as well as toiletries for their families to take home.

Our focused initiative is to provide opportunities for a well-rounded life. We're working to provide students with access to arts, sports and other events that will expand their realm of knowledge. For many of the families we support, taking their kids to these events are beyond their financial means, or they simply don't have the time. Since our 2018 inaugural year, we've taken students to Washington Wizards games, EarthTreks and provided Trauma-Informed Yoga classes.

We work to advocate for the homeless and people in our communities who are in need by providing the necessary items and services. We distribute care packages, clothes, food and other necessities to the homeless and families who fall under the low-income bracket. We seek to make a difference in someone else’s life, even if it's only for a day.
